Ep162: Uncovering the Link Between Vitamin Deficiency and Sleep Difficulties with Dr. Stasha Gominak

OVERVIEW

Every time we don't succeed, but we're willing to say, “Hey, would you come back and try this?” Then we all learn.

Sleep is fundamental to our overall health and well-being. It is the time when our bodies and minds rest and repair, and without it, our physical and mental health can suffer. Poor sleep can lead to a range of health issues, from fatigue and headaches to depression and anxiety. It can also increase the risk of developing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Sleep disorders are becoming increasingly common, with sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. In recent years, the prevalence of sleep disorders has been linked to lifestyle factors such as increased stress, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. The consequences of poor sleep can be far-reaching, impacting our physical and mental health, as well as our relationships, work, and social life.

The importance of sleep cannot be underestimated. Research has shown that getting enough quality sleep can help to improve our physical and mental health, reduce stress, boost our immunity, and improve our concentration and memory. It is also important for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing chronic diseases.

In this episode of Deep into Sleep podcast, host Dr. Yishan Xu, a board-certified sleep psychologist, interviews retired neurologist Dr. Stasha Gominak. Dr. Gominak completed a Neurology residency in 1989 at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Starting in 2004, she began to dedicate more of her practice to the treatment of sleep and sleep disorders. Dr. Gominak is keen to help listeners hear all related to sleep disorders, the possible causes and solutions, and how it is related to vitamin D deficiency and the intestinal microbiome.

They discuss the possible link between sleep difficulties and vitamin deficiency. Dr. Gominak shares her journey of being a puzzled physician, unable to figure out how to help patients with sleep problems until she read research literature and discovered the connection between certain vitamin deficiencies and sleep difficulties. The discussion emphasizes the importance of checking vitamin levels and getting a balanced diet for proper sleep health.

“I've tried to make a path for normal humans who are not scientists to follow this path to make their sleep better." -Dr. Stasha Gominak
